Unique provision: CPL holders can open carry in pistol-free zones but cannot conceal in those locations. No magazine restrictions. Where You Cannot Carry
Even with a valid permit, the following locations in Michigan prohibit firearms:
- Schools (no concealed
- but open carry with CPL is legal in schools — unique provision)
- day care centers
- stadiums
- hospitals
- bars
- churches
- entertainment venues with 2
- 500+ capacity
- courthouses
- casinos
Federal law always applies. Regardless of state law, carrying is always prohibited in federal buildings, post offices, VA facilities, military installations, airports (past TSA security), and anywhere prohibited by federal statute. These restrictions apply in every state.
Self-Defense Law
Stand Your Ground: Yes — Stand Your Ground. In Michigan, you have no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense when you are in a place where you have a legal right to be.
Castle Doctrine: Yes. You have no duty to retreat when defending your home against an intruder.
