Constitutional carry effective July 1, 2021. Iowa also passed a constitutional amendment in 2022 establishing the right to keep and bear arms as a fundamental right subject to strict scrutiny. Optional permits available for reciprocity. 18+ for permitless carry.

Where You Cannot Carry
Even without a permit requirement, the following locations in Iowa prohibit firearms:
- Schools
- courthouses
- state capitol
- casinos
- any posted private property
Federal law always applies. Regardless of state law, carrying is always prohibited in federal buildings, post offices, VA facilities, military installations, airports (past TSA security), and anywhere prohibited by federal statute. These restrictions apply in every state.
Self-Defense Law
Stand Your Ground: Yes — Stand Your Ground. In Iowa, you have no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense when you are in a place where you have a legal right to be.
Castle Doctrine: Yes. You have no duty to retreat when defending your home against an intruder.
