The Honest Assessment
The Hi-Point YC9 is not a good gun by any conventional metric. It's heavy. It's ugly. The trigger is bad. The magazines are proprietary and limited. The ergonomics are an afterthought. Every gun on this site that costs $50 more is a better gun.
But the YC9 is the only new 9mm handgun available for under $220. And a reliable 9mm in your nightstand is infinitely more useful than a SIG P365 you can't afford yet. The YC9 works. It fires. It feeds. It extracts. It does the one job a defensive handgun must do: go bang when you pull the trigger.
The YC9 vs the C9
The YC9 is a genuine improvement over the original C9. The magazine redesign fixed the C9's most common reliability complaint (feed lip deformation). The grip is more ergonomic. The sights are better. The YC9 is what the C9 should have been from the start. If you're considering a Hi-Point, buy the YC9 — the improvements are meaningful.

You can stretch to $250 for a Taurus G3c or GX2, which are better in every measurable dimension. The $50 difference between a YC9 and a G3c buys a dramatically better gun.
