§ Overview

Shall-issue through county sheriff. Training course required. Must inform law enforcement you are carrying during any official encounter. Pistol purchase permit required for handgun purchases (still in effect despite 2023 legislative efforts). Open carry is legal without a permit. Shall-issue permits valid for 5 years. North Carolina is considered a potential future constitutional carry state.

Where You Cannot Carry

Even with a valid permit, the following locations in North Carolina prohibit firearms:
